Safe Driving Tips for Summer

During the summer, more people travel our highways, roads and streets and as a result, more people are seriously injured in car, truck, bicycle, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents.  Being prepared and practicing safe driving techniques may help to prevent you or a loved one from suffering serious injuries or death. 

Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe this summer:

  • Before leaving home, inspect your vehicle
    • Check the oil and fluid levels 
    • Make sure the brakes work safely and your tires are properly inflated
    • Attend to minor repairs or maintenance before embarking on a long trip
  • Get plenty of rest before taking the wheel
    • Sleep deprivation can impair a driver as much as alcohol can
    • If you feel tired while driving, pull over and take a break
  • Do not drive without a license or with an invalid one
  • Never drive if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, even if you are only “buzzed”
  • Avoid distractions
    • Never text while driving
    • If you must make a call, use a headset or hands-free device
    • Do not eat while driving—make stops for meals
  • Make sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt
